Development and Classification of CO2 Gas Shielded Welding Technology

1、Overview

 Carbon dioxide gas shielded welding (referred to as "CO2 shielded welding"(GMAW Welding Process)) is a method of welding with CO2 gas as the shielding gas (sometimes using a mixed gas of CO2 + Ar is called "mixed gas shielded welding"(FCAW Welding Process)). In terms of application, it is easy to operate, suitable for automatic welding and omnidirectional welding, and has high welding efficiency. It is widely used in workshop operations and on-site installation operations.

The price of CO2 gas is low, the welding seam is well formed when short-circuit transition is used, and high-quality welded joints without internal defects can be obtained by using welding wire containing deoxidizer. Therefore, this welding method (GMAW Welding Process ) has become one of the most important welding methods for ferrous materials, which is widely used in major small and medium-sized enterprises.

2、Development Process

As early as the 1930s, it was proposed to use CO2 and water vapor as protective gases, but the test results found that the weld metal was severely oxidized, with many pores, and the welding quality could not be guaranteed. Therefore, inert gas shielded welding such as argon and helium was first used in welding production, which solved the welding problem of non-ferrous metals in the aviation industry at that time, and the advantages of gas shielded welding were gradually recognized and valued by people. However, argon and helium are rare gases, which are expensive and limited in application. So, by the 1950s. People have re-studied CO2 gas shielded welding, and gradually applied to welding production.

3、 Categories

According to the operation method, CO2 gas shielded welding can be divided into two types: automatic welding and semi-automatic welding. For long straight welds and regular curved welds, automatic welding can be used; for irregular or short welds, semi-automatic or manual welding is used.
